goodwins theory music videos

Andrew Goodwin identified a number of features that occur in most music videos these are
A relationship between music and visuals- if its a fast dancing song normal a party scene is used
A relationship between lyrics and visuals- sing about walking out side as you see them walk outside
Genre-related style and iconography - classical genre usually uses suit and tie very simple music video on stage
close ups of main artsist - close ups of artists singing make video personal and relatable
voyeurism especially with females- seductive costumes and dance moves
intertexual references to other media- a msuic video may have a link or a simular clip to a film, they will take ideas and adapt ideas films, games, ad and other media to use in the music video.

using these rules we will construct are music video.

Digipak - Final

Below are images for the frontcover, middle section and backcover of our Digipak, as well as our magazine advert. These images will now be included in our production. I believe the images below are successful in our aim to convey the genre of "Hip-Hop", as well as following the general conventions of a digipak and that of a magazine advert.

Unfortuantely, we were told that as I personally created the images below, the other members in our group wouldn't get credit for them - they therefore had to do their own.

Magazine Advert - First draft

Below is  probably the image we'll be using as our magazine advert. As we are very short on time, I personally have edited images together to produce the piece below. We only have one lesson left and we had a huge amount of work to do so it was neccessary for some extra work to be done in spare time.

Digipak - Second draft

Below are three images that may be included in our "Digipak". After hours of experimenting with different images and effects, I've finally created a number of images that are all suitable for our production.

"Director's Commentary" Research

"On disc-based video formats, an audio commentary is an additional audio track consisting of a lecture or comments by one or more speakers, that plays in real time with video. Commentaries can be serious or entertaining in nature, and can add information which otherwise would not be disclosed to audience members"

Types of commentary

There are several different types of commentary. The two main types simply define the length of the commentary rather than the type of content. They are:
  • Partial or scene-specific, which only covers selected scenes of the film. Sometimes these are recorded without the speaker viewing the film and thus the commentator may make more general comments than pointing out specific details.
  • Feature-length or screen-specific, which is recorded in one session: the speakers watch the movie from beginning to end and give their thoughts directly based on what is happening on-screen.
Typically a commentary track will include feature-length commentary from the film's director, cast members, or occasionally writers and producers. Occasionally actors will perform commentary in-character. (In recording sessions with multiple speakers, a designated moderator may encourage the discussion flow,) Some DVDs include outsider commentary performed by film critics, historians, scholars or fans. In more elaborate productions, multiple speakers from various recording sessions may be edited together for a single audio program.

Some DVDs feature commentaries with on-screen video enhancements, such as telestrator prompts, (allowing the director or commentator to "draw" on the screen, pointing out specific details), or the Ghostbusters "video commentary", where one of the subtitle tracks is used to add silhouettes of the speakers in a manner where they seem to be in a theater commenting on the movie as it was screened for them in the style of Mystery Science Theater 3000. Less common are actual video commentaries, showing the speakers as they are recording the commentary, requiring separate video tracks.

Example -    Jay Z -99 Problems

The above are two videos featuring the official video to Jay Z's popular '99 Problems' in addition to the director's commentary featuring interviews with the artist himself, crew and the video director Mark Romanek.

Digipak - First drafts

Below are some images I edited using photoshop for our Digipak. The images may not be what we finally use, but they do give us some inspirational to try other interesting things.
